I have so much wild honey suckle that i am sick of it . and i have one place on my property line that i would like to plant something different than the honey suckle . and if i am going to plant i prefer edible plants . Donald i am glad you decided to save yourself some money and join us .
I've been playing hookie from my gardening chores. A bunch of my friends met up in Clearbrook Minnesota, and was really surprised to see and eat Spinach, and lettuce out of their regular garden as this is quite early here, I just have been planting small starts and they (Mike and his family )are eating from the garden..... They are also into High Tunnel gardening, and I did learn quite a bit about the technique. They have 4 tunnels about 30ft by 95 ft.... besides feeding their family of children they sell allot of the produce to local restaurants and farmer markets, the plants grow to nearly the ceiling. They keep bee's and raise goat's and sell their products. Mike is a carpenter and does excellent work, he also has trained his sons to build and they work side by side with him., I had allot of fun and enjoyed learning from them this past weekend.
Comment by Glenda Truscott z8 on Monday Donald, i have used this method. The covered container make a mini greenhouse thus keeping the moisture in. I do put holes in the bottom and I have mine on an east facing window but not in the direct sun. Good luck. You might want to take a look at the old posts on the Winter Garden site. There is good info on that site that you could gleen from. Vicky, I started my Jade plant by just letting a leaf sit on the top of the soil. it took a while to sprout but it is now growing and when leaves fall off and onto the soil they sprout too. Yes, I too think that the key is to let them stay on the dry side.
Comment by Vicky Myers on Monday Has any one tried the propagation method using a plastic storage container? I have seen a couple where they used a clear container and put about three inches of course sand in the bottom then misted the plants and put the cover on the container. One said to drill some holes in the bottom and another person said they have had great luck with out drilling the holes. I could sure use some help if any one has seen or used this method of propagation. I also no not remember where to put the container after I put my cuttings in. Sun or shade ?
Comment by Grant Meyer USDA zone 9 on Sunday Hiya Vicky and all,
Most succulents benefit from air-drying in the shade for several days so the cut end can heal over. Otherwise the open stem allows too much water in from wet soil and they rot. Over watering/rot are definitely the biggest threats to rooting cacti or succulents. These crown of thorns, and jades, are succulents. I tend to overwater, especially cuttings, so I'm trying to be disciplined, LOL. Take care and happy gardening everyone.

Comment by Grant Meyer USDA zone 9 on Sunday Just for fun, here's a quick pic of the crown of thorns Euphorbia cuttings I just took. I'm letting them air dry in the shade for several days and then will pot them up. Two are from my one variegated plant, and the other is from my super tall-growing old time heirloom one. My success rate at rooting these is fair, not great, not awful, LOL, so we'll see how I do this time. Tennis ball included to show relative size. Happy propagating everyone!
Comment by Grant Meyer USDA zone 9 on Sunday Sorry about your sister in law, Carol. It's nice to hear the Schefflera cutting is doing well. We're looking forward to a pic or two. Take care and happy propagating all! Grant taking cuttings this morning of various crown of thorns Euphorbias to root later this week after they air-dry for several days.
Comment by Carol Howard/ Louisiana on Sunday this was her favorite plant.
