One more thing.  I meant to say plug, not plub.  Whatever you plant will grow more slowly in the shade, but it will grow.  Oh, I have had good luck with Acuba (gold dust) for a shrub.

Hi Lisa,

We live in Shelby County, so it is N. central Alabama.  We have a VERY shady back yard.  My solution after four years of trying various grasses, etc., is to plub in mondo grass.  This is the small bladed evergreen grass that looks like a smaller version of Lirope, but isn't the same plant.  This one spreads through its root system, lirope clumps and is a bigger plant.  It spreads by division.  The mondo grass is working in my backyard.  It is starting to green up more now that we are having warmer weather and it is getting taller.  It is a ground cover that doesn't have to be cut unless you want to in the fall (I wouldn't).  It seems disease free and it is green!!!  Another thing you can do to take up space is to put in flowerbeds that have shade loving plants--hosta, helliabore (Lenten or Christmas Rose.  The later is evergreen, is blooming right now in my yard and is deer and disease free.  Hosta does die back in the winter, but it is perennial.  You can also plant ferns, oakleaf hydrangeas and impatience for the summer/fall.

I hope this helps.

Termites? Didn't know they ate anything but wood. Weird. Sounds like you might need some predatory nematodes.

I guess the fun of living in Alabama is struggling with the heat and humidity........but I have a beautiful fern that shows the results of the high H & H, as well as other plants.......I have been a little disappointed with my daylilies. Most of them are 3 years old, and they have not multiplied as I would like for them to; maybe not enough sun......so I guess I'll begin moving some of them in the Fall........we are suppose to get a shower this PM; will keep my fingers crossed.....Thanks Jerry for the invite; I would love to see your garden.......I have really enjoyed the pictures.......the same to you......If you are in the Troy area, would love for you to visit.......I try to go to Petals from the Past in Jemison everytime my husband will let me go. HA .......Judith, I will say a prayer for your transplanted daylilies

It is pouring in Shelby County right now. Thank goodness. It cooled down this afternoon before all of this started. I have been watering my transplanted day lilies every single day, but it has been so hot and muggy, I had to make myself do it. I am so grateful for this rain.

Thanks Jerry; I try to do this, but I'm afraid that my watering system is to drag hoses around, and that gets tiring.........we did get a short shower this PM however........in Troy I have sandy soil, and the rain dries out real fast.......but clay in some areas, so it is a real challenge........

I'm worried about some daylilies that I purchased about two weeks ago; no rain since.........I have never had to worry about daylilies, but this heat and lack of rain is stressing everything, including me..............

I just moved about 25 daylilies that were not getting enough sun. They are not happy right now. It is so hot. I have been watering them and I think they will all make it. They are the native ones so they are tough. The hybrids are doing okay, but we got some rain last weekend which did help. I am thinking I am going to be out there with the hose in my hand soon.
