I'm not an expert but, from my experience, I've planted my plants according to how tall and wide they will get when fully matured. Most of my 2-3 foot high plants are spaced 1-2 feet apart. This is so each plants roots will have plenty of space to spread out and not have to compete for food as much. Little decorative plants, especially small annuals, I have planted as close as 4 inches apart. Plants do look great when you plant them in clusters and close together. Just make sure they will have enough room for root growth, too. Here is a pic of part of my garden from this spring. I planted these guys about 1 foot apart. Now they are about 2 feet tall and have grown quite close together and are still doing great. Good luck!
