Comment by Beth Knight 21 hours ago Sharon, I know lots of folks are scared of snakes...when I was a kid growing up in Fla I caught lots of little grass snakes and knew the ones that were poisonous and thee were lots of those in FLA. As I grew up I had pet snakes at home. A gorgeous red tailed boa, a rainbow boa and a rat snake. I eventually gave them to other snake people as they grew too large for me tohandle. Not for everyone but I'm a litlte weird that way I guess.
Comment by Beth Knight 21 hours ago Cathy you may not have seen the flycatcher setting up house right on the side of my arbor. I love this one of his yellow underside (butt) entering his house. I have had so much fun wathcng and listening to them. The snake skin just arrived yesterday so hope they are ready now to make it official and starting laying and sitting.....it is thought that the snakeskin is a warning to predators...maybe they think there is a real snake inthere??? not sure but most every flycatcher nest has snake skin in it. the bottom photo is the male with his crest up eyeing me!!

Comment by Sharon Morgan yesterday Beth...I do not like snakes. I would scream every time I heard one slithering through my garden when I was down on my hands and knees gardening. Everyone knew Sharon saw a snake. They were mostly grass snakes but we had some pines that were pretty long too. Even my small dog at that time would jump when one crossed in front of him...I think I made him scared by screaming. I haven't had any snakes since we moved here, which is just wonderful with me...loved the country but not all of the snakes. We had marshy area close-by. One day I told my husband I was going into the house and not coming out again, I had seen 7 already and I didn't want to see any more that day...I know they eat mice, etc. but I'm not scared of mice like I am of snakes.
Comment by CathyV yesterday That is so cool Beth. I didn't know flychatchers use snakeskins. I'd love to see one of their nests.
Comment by Beth Knight yesterday I took a photo of this snakeskin that the flycatcher was taking to the nest. When I was reading up on flycatchers it said often they will take snakeskins to their nest...right...I thought wow do they go specifically looking for snakeskins and how often do they actually find one??? Well guess they do look for them. I've never seen a snake in my yard or even near my yard so don't know where he found this one. My husband said, maybe they read the same article!!! He is such a hoot.
Comment by Beth Knight yesterday Hey CathyV ..have missed you. I wondered why the titmouse didn't come back to their nest on the porch this year and found out there was a bumblebee nest in their old nest...we got rid of them but I thnk too late. Hopefully some birdies will check again and see that it is okay.
Comment by Elizabeth Fowler yesterday we finally have 2 Hummers I seen them this a.m. ,we should have had our feeders up a month ago,the rain this spring has prolonged doing a lot of things . Will send pics soon I hope.
Comment by CathyV yesterday Oh my I haven't been on here far too long. All of you have posted so many gorgeous photos. Randy, I didn't need to see the sad photo of the praying mantis and hummer :( Your Red Headed Woodpecker is so beautiful.
Our backyard birds are bringing their babies around for food and a bit of exploring. Hope to see the baby quail soon. Yesterday 2 Eurasian Collared Doves came into the pond for the first time. Fun to watch especially when one of them held his wing up during his bathing ritual. Check out the bird looking at him, like what ARE you doing?????
