BUGS-The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

Thought I would start this group when I was working in one of my gardens and was attacked by an army of ants. Add your discussion about specific bugs. Those you like, those you hate, those you don't know what they are,...

How To Post

To All,
Please put you inquiries about bugs that you need IDed, questions, suggestions... in the discussion forum as follows:
1. In the 'Discussion title' field identify the bug by briefly describing what kind of bug, color, size etc. and any other distinguishing aspects. eg green caterpillar with black spikes. If asking a question be specific.

2. Add any other elements in the text field. eg where you found it, what it was doing, eating etc.

3. Use the camera icon in the tool bar above the text box to add the photo in the body of the text. Adding attachments can be difficult for readers to find, use, download etc

4. Once an ID is made - can the original poster please edit the title by adding the ID in parenthesis behind the original title.

That way newcomers and "old posters' can go to the discussions before they post about bugs that may have already been identified. This may help with keeping the comments section from getting overcrowded and the discussion section easier to find information. Thanks

that's scary! (the bee and the weather!)

Ok, this weather is just freaky. I just had hubby up killing a bee (1"x1/4") not fuzzy bumble bee. Normally I can kill bugs on my own but I don't go after bees since I don't know if I'm allergic or not.

But what the heck is going on 1st a skeeter yesterday and now a bee, this is Northern IL in Jan.

And now I'm freaked because if there is 1 there are more, I don't mind them outside but they don't belong inside.

I didn't know what it was fluttering but I had the camera and just started snapping pictures this is blown up from the original photo but it was the clearest that was taken and I was shocked to see what it was...lol The grasshoppers are fairly new to the yard as well. I think I'm creating a happy enviorment for bugs and critters alike.

Wonderful pictures of the Grasshoppers Robin. I saw one that I chased around for a while trying to figure out what it was till it landed. I usually see ones with white or yellow wings but the one I saw had orange/red wings.

I thought this was cool... I couldn't figure out what I was seeing fluttering until I saw it land. And I was darn lucky to get the pic.

As you can probably see from earlier I have had an over abundance of Praying Mantises in my garden. Today I saw what I thought was a myth, a Praying Mantis killing a Hummingbird. I started a discussion above showing a Praying Mantis with its Hummingbird Prey.

Every time I go into the garden I seem to see another garden predator attacking a butterfly. With all the Paying Mantises in the garden I'm amazed that I have any butterflies at all. Then I see a little Skipper getting carried off by a Killer Wasp, I really wonder how butterflies can survive at all with all the predators that feed on them. I thought the taste of Monarchs was suppose to keep Monarchs safe from Predators but they seem like the Preying Mantises favorite meal. I never saw the Bearded Burglar Fly eat any when he was here but he probably did. Enjoyed seeing your web Margaret, thanks for sharing!

Isn't it great to see Lady Bugs. This is the first year since we moved here in 1999 that I've seen an actual Red Lady Bug.

Yesterday I saw a Lady Bug. I usually only see only the asian lady bugs which are more orange. Today I saw a little spider with it's prey' I never even saw the spider till I went to see why the moth didn't move.Lady Bugs one with spots and the other without!Moth and spider
