My friend is having a big problem with Japanese Beetle (she's in Missouri).  Destroying her hibiscus, apparently, she's tearing her hair out!  Any suggestions would be most gratefully received! (Yes, I did invite her to join GI, hopefully she will get round to it!).  Many thanks!

Knock them off into a bucket of soapy water. She should buy a product called Milky Spore. It is an organic powder that over time kills the grubs that become the beetles. I have used this product for a few years now applying it in the spring and fall and the number of beetles has been greatly reduced. It is nearly impossible to completely rid one property of the bugs unless everyone around you is doing something to get rid of them. They can fly covering quite a distance. Whatever she does tell her not to buy the beetle traps as that only attracts more of them. While the damage they do looks awful, the plants won't die. A lot of gardeners will remove any buds on their plants until the beetles are gone in about 6 weeks. Hope this helps.

Great advice Maris, thanks so much!!  I, too struggle with these dastardly pests.  They attacked my Cannas this year and I barely got any blooms because of them :(  Will go out and buy some Milky Spore tomorrow!!  THANKS!

Thank you so much Maris - I have passed this on!!
tell her to make sure her neighborhood isn't using those japenese beatle bags or tryangle green boxes too, for they attract the beatles which in-turn lay new eggs in the yard. there are plenty of things on the market to buy and treat the yard with diznion or granules are a  few.
Thanks, Karen!
