I was reading in the comments about someone's hollyhocks dying, and it made me think of how mine suddenly died last year. They started getting these yellow spots all over the leaves, then they spread and just died. They looked so bad i ended up cutting them all down. Later that fall, i noticed the stalks that were left in the ground looked like swiss cheese--all filled with holes and sponge-lookin. Could this be slugs, as was suggested for the other person's problem? I did see a lot of slugs that year, but thought nothing of it.

I'd like my hollyhocks to be healthy and pretty again this year--is there anything i can do?

hollyhocks are reseeders, the plant dies off. the yellowing on leaves is natural but sightly and you can trim them off while you enjoy your flowers. Let them go to seed and then dry and replant them or you can leave the stocks with seeds for the birds and save some for yourself replant in fall or early spring. hope this helps you!! Slugs had nothing to do with it, sponge fibers give the strength to hold up the many flowers it produces. If you want to get rid of the slugs you can sprinkle salt on them or put a cup of beer out for them, they are very hungry for hosta's so if you have them as a plant try to keep them controlled.
