Comment by Randy Anderson zn.5/Il. USA yesterday I hope I didn't confuse you . Your butterfly is the one with the question mark on the hind wing. The orange on the Snout Butterfly is a little brighter when there in flight but you'll see the Question Mark spread it's wings more the the Snout. Both are neat Butterfles.
Thanks Randy, I thought you would know. I never got to see his wings spread, he was passing through to fast. I do see his large snout, will look for the question mark.
Comment by Randy Anderson zn.5/Il. USA yesterday No Gail it is a Question Mark Butterfly. I took a picture of one today and it had a tough winter from looking at it's wings. Yours is in very good condition. I'll show you a picture of an American Snout. I hope the clarity is good enough so you can see his large snout. I usually see them in trees or puddling both places there camoflage makes them almost invisable the same as your Question Mark. Do you see the semi colan or Question Mark on the hind underwing. enlarge the picture and you should beable to see it easier. It isn't very large and in the center of the hind wing.
Comment by Randy Anderson zn.5/Il. USA on Sunday I have seen them on flowers that June Bugs and Japanees Beetles have caused to rot and actually were feeding on excretions they were leaving. I would give the rotting Pears and even water melon rinds that are left over. Red Spotted Purples are a butterfly that likes dung. A damp spot in the garden will attract butterflies as well. Last year I had a water main break in front of the house and I had a few butterflies puddling in the damp earth for a couple of days, after they emerge they need a source of water and minerals. I hope every ones weekend is safe.
Comment by Cynthia (Cindy) Zn 7B Tx on Sunday Thanks for the info Randy. I will need to rememdy that. I have a feeder I can set out fruit on. Wonder if they would like pears? I have a pear tree, and I noticed some on the ground.
Randy, I love these! I used to get Painted Lady caterpillars and release the butterflies after they had emerged from their chrysalids when I was teaching.

Comment by Cynthia (Cindy) Zn 7B Tx on Saturday Thanks Randy:) This is the first year I have seen so many different varieties. This particular one was so cooperative to photograph. Some of the others are in constant motion and I can never snap a shot of them. I keep trying though. There is this one white one, that I have yet to capture.
Comment by Randy Anderson zn.5/Il. USA on Saturday They go by both names given to this butterfly, there in a group of butterflies that are called Emperor. We have this one and a Tawny Emperor here in IL. Everyone have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day Weekend, and a special thanks to all our Heros living and dead!
