Comment by betty lane on May 23, 2012 at 11:25am I have worms eating the leaves of my grape vein, never happened before. How do you get rid of them.
Comment by Carole on May 23, 2012 at 7:57am I'm so excited this year for my grapevines...I've been following William's advice about cutting them way back and taking the fruit off for the first 3 seasons...so....there seems to be a lot of little clusters on them now. I've even managed to get two cuttings from the fall to start growing in other parts of the yard. I'm hoping for some tasty, juicy fruit this season! Yeah!
Comment by Carole on April 27, 2012 at 11:21pm Well after cutting back the grapevines to two buds they are coming back like gangbusters! I took cuttings and put them all over the various yards to see if any survive and I see two of them sprouting already! It'll be fun to watch the newbies grow now that I can enjoy my more seasoned ones.
I would pull the fruit off this year and next year you can leave the fruit on from there out. You will be glad you did in the long run and will have a better grape production.
Comment by Carole on January 29, 2012 at 6:54pm Thanks William! I cut my grapes way back like you had advised last year...down to two buds...they seem to be very well established so I think this year they will be very healthy. Since this is it's third year can I let the fruit set just keeping it thinned out or do I need to remove it all again this season?
Hi Carole I pruned my grapes a few weeks ago , pretty heavy this year. The apple trees I propagated a while back seem to be doing all right so far. We will see here in about 2 months how they really are doing. Good luck on your tree branches and vines
Comment by Carole on January 24, 2012 at 1:21pm Now that the rain has stopped for a while I'm going to prune back my grape vines so I can do something with the trimmings.
I took some cuttings from my fruit trees also William to see if I could propagate them. Can't hurt to try and how wonderful if I had several more fruit trees for free!
Comment by Robin (N.IL zone 5) on December 21, 2011 at 3:23pm I had an elderly gentleman who loved my grapevines tell me that all you have to do is snap the vine and put the open part into the soil and it will grow. He loved the vines and I gave him permission to harvest whatever he wanted, but for some reason his son wouldn't let him. (shrug!)
But you can come over and prune my vines if you want :) they are out of control. You can't see it but one vine runs across the back fence to the bush that is blocking the neighbors back door.
