Moulting or not???
Okay, it's hot in TX we all can agree. Birds need extra water and more protein. I have a Dominecker that appears to be molting. I am finding feathers everywhere and all my other birds are looking rough as well. They have not laid one egg in over a week now and I am beginning to get worried. Do I have reason to worry or is this natural? From all I have read, they should moult when the days are shorter. Information is important here, so please help me out if you can.

Could they be reaching a broody time? My hen will get done laying a clutch of eggs, then she will either pluck or her feathers just molt on her brood patch on either side of her sternum or keel. That way her warm skin will have contact with the eggs when she sits. Your hens might be getting ready to do that.

if they are doing that, then they better find a rooster and start laying eggs again. Mostly I was seeing smaller feathers but now seeing some of the larger ones, so my thinking says molting or stressed with this heat.

or they may have mites...from wild birds.
mine are loosing as well mostly from the roosters i think but will treat their dust area anywho!!

don't have roosters....wolves got them and the ducks long time ago. I am thinking the heat is stressing them but then again, this one out of the pen could be moulting. Just gonna see what happens. She is not lethargic or anything like that, so watching and seeing....
