Ideas for Fall Containers and Window Boxes

It's getting down into the 40's at night here in Wisconsin and it's got me thinking fall! Just curious as to what you've all tried in your autumn containers that you'd definitely do again! Thanks!

I would think that you would be limited in Wisconsin what you can grow in containers in the fall and winter. In the N. GA mountains we are zone 7b I will plant in my deck/ window boxes daffodil bulbs and tulip bulbs in the bottom of my containers and then crocus and Muscari bulbs in the next layer and then in the top layer pansies, snapdragons, dusty miller, kale, parsley and thyme. I also will stick in some small ivy to droop over the side. In the larger containers I will put some small evergreens that get moved to a spot in the garden in the spring and around them will go more pansies. But my summer containers are looking still great I have Thunbergia the sunflower vine going crazy. I will have to take a picture of them they are going to take over the house.

Yep, we are limited. Hard frosts can come anytime after September 15th. Your pictures are really lovely. I love those purple petunias this year....mine kept a neat shape the entire summer unlike my leggy double petunias.

I'm in Northern Illinois - potatoe vines still do okay, and begonias - impatiens surprisingly do fine until the first real frost .. and I sometimes replant pansies around now ... then mums, mums, mums ....I do some greenery around Christmas in the flower boxes - got some leftover Christmas tree branches for free at Home Depot last year - cut them up and layed them in there - looked pretty all winter ... guess it makes us Northerners enjoy our Spring & Summer even more :-)

Those are beautiful - my petunias all got leggy this year (& I Pinched!!) except the ones I put in the ground :-(

That particular color of purple looks florescent. It is awesome. I have The Wave Petunias and they are going crazy in most of my containers. I love it one plant goes far and easy to grow from seed. I winter sow mine mostly. Sedum is good for sure this time of year too. Allysium and smells great. Mexican hats, Salvias, Cat Mint.Astilbe, Achilleas, Cleome(however you spell it.)

I enjoy! growing zinnias and marigolds in containers.
You will have color and blooms right up to your first frost.
Here is a photo of white wedding zinnia.
very white in color and is pretty!

Poinsettias and rosemary of course! That's what I'm sticking in my containers. It may not last past the season, but to me these two are the epitome of the season ... well, winter maybe not fall. It definitely sets me in a good mood no matter a bad day to come home and see a big container of these outside my door, welcoming me back into the joy of the season.
