Permalink Reply by Cindy H on April 25, 2011 at 8:58pm Hi Maggie,
I started growing veggies in containers last year & did not have much success with the only exception of okra! I then learned that growing veggies in our area really is best done in the fall. Especially for veggies like, radishes, squash ( zucchini), beans, etc. Any veggie can be grown in a container too. Even potatoes.
So..this year I started peppers & okra..already they are doing well. I have 1 zucchini plant left from three & I think the only reason it's surviving is it's in the shade for the most part. My cherry tomato plant is also surviving as I was told to plant is deep iin a large planter as they grow long roots. All these containers are on the eastern side of my house as that is best for ALL veggies anyway.
Hope I have been of some help.

The thing to remember about container vegetable gardening is to water frequently. Soil in containers tends to dry out faster than soil in the ground, and I've found that daily watering is required, especially when it gets hot in the summer. I had wonderful luck with my tomatoes last year when my husband built me a couple of self-watering planters from a plan I found on the Internet. The plants in the self-watering planters grew to over 8 feet tall and the yield was phenomenal. Google EarthTainer to find building plans ans advice on how to grow veggies sussessfully in this fabulous device. Good luck.
Permalink Reply by Shirley Sharpe on May 1, 2011 at 7:52pm Radishes grow quite well in boxes, as lettuce and other goodies! I have grown peppers and tomatoes as well. With the cooler crops, you control the heat, and moisture. Radishes grown this way are quite mild and tasty, seeing as how they never dry out, due to making sure they don't!
Shirley thank you so much for the ideal to plant some of my vegies in boxes like the ones in your pictures. I wont have to use as much soil this way. And I can put them on my outside tables and keep the darn rabbits from getting to them. Yea Shirley.
Yep! Those critters keep getting into my pots too. Was surprised that my chives came up in spite of the pot being knocked over several times! Someone is messing w/ the dirt I planted the okra in. Guess I need to get screens to cover the pots!
I hope to transplant the tomatoes into containers soon.

Permalink Reply by Jan Gall on May 31, 2011 at 3:53am I planted okra the week after Easter in a 3 gallon container. So far, so good! Jan, you must be in the mid-west/east because down here we need A WHOLE lot of rain days! I'm afraid we are going to be put on mandatory water rationing here pretty soon and all my plants (not to mention the grass) will suffer. Wish we could somehow trade off rain for sun and vice versa! LOL Good luck!
