Oh sorry Darlene - I always presume people know I live down under!!  Yes we leave our Dahlias in through the whole year and just cut them back to ground level and wait for them to reappear.  Of course I added lots more new ones to the garden too as I adore them!  Last year the Dahlias flowered for months and months, I guess the temperate climate helps of course.  I like the fact that it can be searing hot and they seem to thrive on the warm weather.  We are only into Spring now but already temps have reached 93 today!  I even turned on the air con for a while!

Darlene I did post some photos on my page of my french Dahlias from last season, as I am unable to post to any groups for some strange reason.

Oh Lyn, when I read your post that your Dahlias are just starting to come up all I could think was this poor lady has no idea what she's doing. Then I took a look at where you live and now I'm jealous that your season is just getting started. We are expecting frost by the end of this week and the cold temps will knock mine down. It will be time to dig and divide.

Enjoy your coming Dahlia season.

I'm waiting for the rest of mine to start popping up through the soil.  One of them had a good munching from presumably a snail, but I know once they do start to show through the soil they grow at an amazing rate.  I was really surprised when my french Dahlias grew to over 6 ft high, I then realised what the packet meant when it said - Must be staked!!

thanks lyn....i knew i had some of the purple dahlias and also some of the purple and white, but i was completely surprised by the yellow with the pink edges!...it was such a nice surprise!...i'm going to have to dig them up within the next couple of weeks before the first frost!

Margaret - No I am in Australia - just outside Sydney, but adore NZ all the same, was there earlier this year.  NZ has a far  better climate for plant growing than we do as they seem to get more rain.  Their climate is also very similar to that of Tasmania - the wee island that hangs off the end of Australia that so many people forget to include!

Yes we are just midway through Spring and the dahlias should start to flower around Christmas.  I only had 3 different dahlias last year but was amazed at the amount of flowers, their size and how long they flowered for.  I think that is what has won me over.  They stand so big and beautiful in the garden and this year I have added them to the back garden also.

I just love looking at all the wonderful dahlia pictures that people post here, it just encourages me to add more!!!
