I figured I'd post a picture of the front, for comparison.

Well, I did aerate at the beginning of spring, after the ground was thawed.  I then used revive.  The lawn continued to look horrible.  A couple of weeks later, before it got too hot, I used weed and feed and began watering 3 times a week, twice a day, for 8 minutes.  The lawn continues to die.  I think there may be a disease. I use TruGreen services on my front lawn and it is going marvelously.  It's the nicest lawn in the neighborhood.  The back, however is a disgrace and it's breaking my heart. My TruGreen guy can't bring his chemicals or machinery in to my backyard, as the only way to enter the yard is through the home. He said he'll look at it, diagnose the problem and tell me what I can do.  He may even be able to provide the "medicine" to fix it, if it's a dry chemical, and I can apply it myself with a hand held spreader.  Wish me luck.  I've had this yard for over 10 years and it's never been sick.  It now has bare spots, and dry spot that just look dead.  There is a little green grass that sprouts up around, but not enough. It's thin and horrible looking.  I'll post pictures.

Interesting, Rich.  Next year I'll wait until summer to aerate and see what happens.  My yard is pretty compacted, so it seems that any aerating any time is good.  I usually only do it once per year.  I agree that watering a little, but more often seems to help.

Back lawn must be a hot spot.   IDEALLY, the best time to aerate (so more water can get into the soil) is the summer, when it needs it the most.  Might have to rent one yourself.   Perhaps the best method of watering is a little water often.   As with any lawn, keep the fertilizing up;  Oct-winterizer (2lbs N),  June and Aug-high N (1-2lbs N/1000sq ft)
