Comment by Vicky Myers on April 13, 2012 at 11:55am Ok where did you all go I want to talk about edible flowers. I've been trying to get this place in all edibles some day but not there yet. I read 3 books that a friend had and found 2 of them to own. I really want more edible flowers in my garden. I started from seed, pansies, impatients, & dianthus so far indoors and will get b. buttons, pot marigolds, an other edible marigold and more planted outside soon now that it has warmed up. I already have chives garlic chives growing, the borage is popping up all over out there need to get it out of the vegie beds. Chamomile and other things popping up all over too. Herbs are doing well one rosemary is in full bloom. The johnny jump ups also plant themselves where ever they want, this one did good.
Comment by Vicky Myers on March 10, 2012 at 4:25pm I started some dianthus seeds and they were up in just a couple of days. Cute little things, just little dots right now. Waiting for the impatien seeds to sprout. Need to go plant some pot marigolds in the garden. Also bought some edible light yellow flowered marigolds that I need to get started yet, may just wait and direct seed them.
Comment by Vicky Myers on February 15, 2012 at 9:52am The Carrots Love Tomatoes book says borage is an excellent provider of potassium, calcium & other natural minerals of benefit to plants. She just said grow in orchards & as a border to strawberries. And that honey bees like to feast on the blossoms which I can atest to as they are all over my plants. The fact that it supplies calcium should benefit the toms from getting blossom end rot. What the book says to plant by tomatoes is asparagus to protect the asparagus from beetles. Toms are compatible with chives, onion, parsley, marigolds, nasturtium, carrot, garlic, stinging nettle, & redroot pigweed in small quantities. Don't plant corn or potato near toms. Toms are beneficial to roses and can make a solution out of the leaves of toms to spray on rose black rot.

Comment by Vicky Myers on February 14, 2012 at 7:09pm Calendula can take over too if you let them go to seed. I planted camomile once and have a whole back yard of it every yr. I harvest the flowers, dry them and pull plants that are scattered every where, try to keep them in one area. I'm trying to learn all I can about edibles and would like the gardens to only be edible but there are a few flowers I still like that aren't edible. Turned the whole back yard into a veggie garden.
Comment by Vicky Myers on February 14, 2012 at 12:24pm I planted borage long ago an have had more than enough since. It reseeds all over. Just be careful not to eat too much of it as it can be not good for you. The bees love it. Also a good companion to strawberries. I'm not home right now so can't look at my books to tell you more about it.
