Flowers are fun and challenging to paint 3 Replies

You have to work fast to capture a flower in a painting because it might be gone the next day.Sometimes I shoot a photo for reference to finish the painting if I don't get all the details done at…Continue

I start off small with a few sketches of what you want to paint. Take a sketch book around with you and or take a camera then from the pics that you take you can combine parts of pics or pick part of one. Get down a subject on paper get it how you like it that trans pos it on to your canvas. The painting is then the fun part. Cards to friends and family are small and easy to use for a start. Then go bigger

Hi Cheryl,
Just remember one thing I learned, less is better, in watercolor, more is better in oil, meaning in oil you can sometimes remove what you put on the canvas, but in watercolor you can never remove what you put on the paper. Good luck and enjoy, it is addicting and very relaxing. I can get lost in my work.

Hi Cheryl,

I have a very basic pamphlet by Howard Simon that I would be willing to fax you the pages, or send by USPS to your house for free.  Perhaps you have an artist studio close-by that gives instructions?  I am also from the Sunshine State in Titusville.  Do you also happen to ride a Harley?   :)   I go over to Leesburg Bike Fest, too.

any suggestions on how to get started with watercolor?  i have bought some paints and brushes and practice paper.  I usually photograph nature and want to paint from it.  Any good books or videos out there?

Hello, Elizabeth - YES! It is VERY nice to have such a wonderful husband! I appreciate him, and just like you, I feel we are a team, even though he thinks I am the artist. He puts up with my "curb-shopping" and saving of odds and ends to "make something". I am truly blessed, and sounds like you are too. The paint I used was just a gloss acrylic. I used a sharpie marker for the black outlining. I have not sealed it yet, but I definitely will before putting it outside.

Let me add that perplexed hubby is also a wonderful hubby! He drilled a hole in the middle for me. :)

Am posting this here and in Funk And Flash...this is a hubcap that I found. It was grayish silver and cracked inside on one of the brackets. (Hubby thought I was nuts to pull over and pick it up!) I painted it white, then did a simple floral border. I am going to make it into the top of a bird feeder with a heavy frosted glass dome I found from an old lighting fixture. Will post again when finished! Having fun with it!
