Comment by Susan Bisbee on December 18, 2011 at 2:23pm I was just wondering if anyone in south florida had any luck with this particular insect and ladybugs. My previous use wasn't with this.
Comment by Bob (Z9B Florida) on December 18, 2011 at 2:08pm Well then you already know the answers sorry I could not help. Cheers!
Comment by Susan Bisbee on December 18, 2011 at 2:05pm Yes, there is a mold on the earlier infested areas, just before the leaf drops off. There are no ladybugs that I can tell. I have had good luck keeping them in the yard in the past with ladybug lures and only releasing them at dusk as they don't fly at night.
Comment by Susan Bisbee on December 18, 2011 at 2:02pm The infestation is so complete that the insecticidal soap was insufficent to the task, it is a fine white web sort of affair on the underside of the leaves that are keeping the eggs on, the resultant hatch is a small white fly but not a whitefly, looks like aphids to me. I may also have leaf miners which I am less worried about. The aphids have defoliated one whole tree and are spreading to others. I love the thought of ladybugs eating them all up and have had good luck with them in a different location in the past. I was just wondering if this was a different beast as it seems to come from a few doors down and I belive will recur unless their yard is treated as well. I thought the ladybugs might breed and take care of the whole area nicely in time. I was just wondering if anyone else had success with this in the south florida area. Thanks, SPB
Comment by Bob (Z9B Florida) on December 18, 2011 at 2:00pm Susan ... lady bugs work but they will migrate to wherever the wind carries them or they find a new source of food. It's not unusual to release several hundred or a thousand one day and two days later, not be able to find even one! My theory therefore is not to buy them but hope they occur naturally. If you have aphids and the often resulting black sooty mold on leaves, lady bugs are generally present too.
Comment by Bob (Z9B Florida) on December 18, 2011 at 1:56pm Susan ... you've just described a couple different things. The aphids are probably the insect you describe for sure and you can do a lot of good on those with just a high pressure out of a hose nozzle. Soapy water from a sprayers is good too. Horticultural soap and or oil also works as do most instecticide on aphids...just check the bottle. The tracks on the leaves are probably leaf miners and it's somewhat difficult to get rid of them as you have to catch them before they enter the leaves..once in, nothing touches them other than to pick the leaves. Good news is that they do little actual damage to the plant in most cases. Help any?
Comment by Susan Bisbee on December 18, 2011 at 1:42pm Question- I have these sticky small white flies/aphids infesting my yard- does anyone know if ladybugs work and if so, how long before they clear the infestation. they make these squigly circles on the underside of leaves.
