Has anyone ever did the flower pouches?  Since doing them a few years I am bored and need some suggestions on plantings.. What can I plant in them to make them stand out and be a focal point as I usually hang them on the entrance gates?

Try planting potato vine and wave petunias in the pouches.  There are also a new variety of trailing impatients that are beautiful.  Things that cover the pouches completely look the best.  Also keep fertilized, the water rinses the nutrients away quickly.
Michelle I happen to have quite a few Waves this year.  and I was thinking about picking up some of the potato vine.  How would one put a wave in the pouch openings... Oh maybe use the smaller plants...Thanks so much Michelle!
Hi, I took your advice and went out and got a couple of the trailing impatients, I cut them back and now trying to root them..... Thanks for the advice on fertilizing I usually fertilize almost every time I water.  It just leaches right through, you almost have to if you want it to look like the magazines! Thanks for your comments!
I seen a pouch that had Hens and Chicks in it. It was very unique and looked pretty darn good! I have a lot of shade so I do impatiens. I know you are looking for something new so here are a few suggestions. Coleus... they have some that have very interesting foliage. I would plant 1 of the same kind. Also for sun maybe trailing verbena...maybe purple and pink combo? Petunia is great too. Look through a mail order catalog to spark your imagination!!  Best of luck!
Martha,  Thanks for your reply! I am going to do a Succulent Wreath and put it in my old Concrete Bird Bath.  Last evening I was invited to a local church where we heard a local garden shop owner show us his ways with Annuals especially toward containers.... He had a spectacular round large hanging bowl type pot with which you can transform into a nice sitting container.  He put a Mexican feather grass in the middle and different Coleus around the outside, we thought it was just great.  Also He did another pot a Charcoal Grey styrofoam (light Weight) with the new Phantom, Black Knight and another Black Petunia with a pink stripe down the middle using a deep purple taller plant in the middle and it was a smash with the crowd, he mentioned the dark colors are in this year!
Jan I have also seen Herbs planted in them too. I think they would have to be smaller herbs though. Maybe she kept them pinched so they didn't get to large.

Hey Gang,

I have 3 pouches this year and have already done one in Trailing Lobelia.  I think I'll try one in a wave but skipping a few of the pouches, maybe a sweet potato, I do so many annuals and perinnals that it really is expensive to use some plants.   I will try and get some photos after they are planted up and going good!

If you have some time - both coleus and potato vine cuttings root real easily in water and you could get several plants by pinching off the center of the plant and rooting it.  Perillas which look a lot like coleus but can take full sun also root really easy!   I cut the holes in my pouches a little larger as I had bigger plants and they still worked - I just packed the dirt in tight.  Million bells would work nicely and skipping a few of the pouches is a great idea.  I think torenia would be beautiful and also a supertunia or trailing petunia would look nice!

Lissa, Thanks for the ideas....I have 3 more pouches to do up.  I think I have allot of the Trailing Lobelia and might try another pouch of that but it so delicate looking, can you think of a nice container that would look better for my Lobelia?.  I use Red and White Fibrous Begonias in pouches  as they use them allot up in the shops.  I got a steal on the new big hanging pots with the big holes on the sides and I would like to put the sweet potato vine in it with some Waves as I got a steal on them also.  One of my favorite shops does them up and charges about $80 for the biggest one, $60 planted up for the empty pot I bought for $1 because of no hangers but I went to another shop and bought them for $2 .  There is allot of soil in them and many plants but they skip some of the holes and put waves and supertunia along with the Sweet Potato plants.  I bought some of the Sweet potato plants but I think it is a great idea to start a bunch with some cuttings.... Hey I'm game for all the help I can get!!
