Anyone gonna do it this year? Its not starting your seed and growing indoors. Its starting your seed outside, but in mini greenhouses. Yes, in the dead of winter. Yes, with snow on the ground.
You prep the containers, sow the seeds and set them outside. They freeze and thaw and freeze and thaw and the seeds sprout when they're ready. :)
They don't read the seed packets or know what zone they are in or read a calendar or thermometer.. they just know when and what to do. :)
Yes it works. With or with out the snow.
Its for people who don't have a green house but want to get going on sowing those seeds when its still really cold outside, or people who can't spend lots of money buying all the plants they want.
I've never had success sowing seed outdoors. Either our spring rains and tornados wash them away or the birds get 'em! This has been the only method of growing from seed that has worked for me.

I'm going to use my saved nursery pots and cups like this instead of all the milk jugs and soda bottles:
Winter Sowing in large clear tubs
I think it will look nicer and be easier to move them once they sprout and need watering and sunning.

I'm talking both. Though personally I only do flowers. Veggie gardening in N Texas just doesn't work. Or I should say it takes TOO much work, to work.
I have no idea what you might be doing wrong for all your transplants to fail when you put them in the ground.
I do know lettuce prefers cool weather. Its a fall to winter crop where I live.
The Seeds know what to do and when to do it. Its us humans who have to learn what's going on! :)
Check out the links, do some reading about winter sowing and you might figure out what you're doing wrong?
Permalink Reply by Mary Howell on November 3, 2011 at 4:50pm I certainly will, We obtained enough double paned glass windows to build a greenhouse but won't get it done till spring. I have tons of seeds to try this year and am very interested in the winter sow idea, especially since you don't have to harden off the plants.
