Comment by Joanne Williams on June 2, 2011 at 10:36am I'm a beginner veggie gardener and am currently cramming with my new gardening library. Here's what I have:
1,001 Old-Time Garden Tips by Roger Yepsen
Guide to Alabama Vegetable Gardening by Walter Reeves
The $64 Tomato by William Alexander
Trowel & Error by Sharon Lovejoy
The New Low-Maintenence Garden by Valerie Easton
Carrots Love Tomatoes by Louise Riotte
Comment by wholeed on April 18, 2011 at 8:13am For general purposes, you can't beat Rodale's Ultimate Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening
I'm also fond of The Farmer's Earthworm Handbook, most of which is entirely adaptable to small suburban gardens. This covers "real" worms -- not just the brandling worm (E. foetida) which has become popular lately.
Another specialized book you don't want to miss is Teaming with Microbes: The Organic Gardener's Guide to the Soil Foo... . You MIGHT find the biology a little intimidating, but it's a fascinating book that really explores some of the whys and wherefores of organic gardening. The section on aerated compost tea is priceless.
