Should lavender be pruned?  if so when and how much.  I live in the Willamette valley and have cut them back in the past in the fall, only to lose them.  Any ideas??  thanks

I always give my lavender a 'haircut' after it has bloomed. Keeps it from getting too leggy.
Several years ago, I bought the Sunset Western Garden book. It said to prune back immediately after blooming. I have done that and with the older blooms trimmed back some of the supporting stock. I don't trim it severly, and never the real larger woody parts and have done well. Because we are in a colder region, I have chosen the most hardy lavender.
When I drive up to Sequim the farms have there lavendar bushes trimmed in a rounded shape. It looks nice
I just prune off the flower stalks in fall or spring.

Lavender Haircut Indeed :)
