Does anyone up here worry about moss in the flower beds?  Are there any benefits?  The Japanese Garden in Seattle has lots of moss.  Any thoughts or experiences?

Seattle has moss everywhere, including lawns, pastures, trees and rocks.  It is the result of overcast skies 360 days a year and rain (or drizzle) 330 days a year.  We also have lots of lichen and tree mushrooms!
Just curious.  Most of the time I just thin it out and try to keep the weeds out.  I prefer moss to grass and weeds but I didn't know if I needed to be concerned.  Thanks.

If it gets problematic, simply fertilize the area of concern and it'll die back.  Use a fertilizer that contains iron in lawns and it'll grow a darker green and the moss will tend to disappear.

I have a patchy grassy area next to my driveway that is shaded for all but three or four hours (morning sun) in my front yard.  I applied fertilizer with moss control on my side and you can see the difference.  My neighbor's (untreated) grass/moss is on the right side of the picture.

Thanks Harry. We have moss in our grass but I don't really care. I would just as soon have flower beds instead. I will try the fertilizer. I do fertilize but I don't think I do enough.

Hi Carol,

We have loads of moss in our garden and grass (Oregon). I often wondered the same question. Usually when I'm removing it from my flower beds. I have yet to see any positive benefit to this kind of moss in flower beds.

I've created a step-ible flower moss/grass area on the north side of my home this year, in hopes to prevent "the other" kind of moss from growing in winter. Has anyone else done this?

I actually prefer moss to grass, and with the number of moss specialty growers, I'm apparently not alone!
