I live on  the Oregon coast in zone 8b. But gardening here is much different than zone 8 inland. We get a great deal of rain year round, which I really don't mind. But the amount of steady sun we get is difficult to predict. Summers inland can get up in to the high 80's for days at a time. Our summer temps stay in the 70's with only an occasional day in the low 80's. It is impossible to grow most melons here and the only tomatoes that are successful here are the plants we buy every year from the ladies Elks Club during our Rhododendron festival the second weekend in May. They are fairly mature plants  when we put them in. I have attempted seedling with no success. This summer I am working on creating a potager at one end of our lawn as this is the spot of our yard receiving the most sun. I would appreciate any helpful hints from other members with the same gardening conditions.

Thanks, Diana

I love Hostas and they do great and are shade to part shade and the fact that they are a preiannal and get fuller every year I love them and they are easy to take care of:)
Yes, the hostas are beautiful here! The rhododendrons and azaleas are especially beautiful! Dahlias love the climate here along with many othere perennials. I have even found a few succulents that do well along a sunny block wall next to a crushed granite path.

Yes, I do love the hydrangeas here as well. I used to live in the central valley of CA where the soil is so alkaline. We only had pink there so I do feel lucky to have the acid soil here for some of my favorite plants. I had to move 3 plants this winter though. They were near the road and I believe the deer were eating the buds. I do have a time keeping the deer away from my favorite plants, the roses being their favorite! I have move the hydrangeas and the roses to my lawn area which is pretty well gated off. At least I hope it is well enough. We'll see. The deer are pretty clever and we live in the woods near a lake. Other plants that I find do well here are lilies of all kinds and species geraniums. I have just moved some peony plants out of the shade into a sunnier spot as well. They haven't bloomed in the 3 years we have been here. Wish me luck!

Do you have hydrangeas? One thing I've noticed when visiting the coast is how amazingly deep blue almost purple some of the hydrangeas are. I've considered taking a soil sample to try and get the same result here in Eugene.
