Hello - I live in Olympia and our property is bordered by fir trees and very shady. I have a side yard next to our house that was grass that I am turning into a garden. So far, I've torn up the grass and made a walkway out of cement mold (cobblestone looking blocks).  Right smack in the middle of the yard is our septic tank with 3 huge green plastic lids.  Any suggestions as to what to do there?

Thank you, Sheri. I have talked with the city and as long as the septic can be accessed, I can plant. So, anything in the ground would be torn up when it has to be serviced. So, I was thinking rocks, potted plants, etc. Right now I have a bird feeder plopped in there. So looking for creative ideas of movable gardening. The mirror idea is intriguing. I will post a before picture soon.

Great info! Thank you Sheri. Not sure if having a bird feeder there is a good idea now....

My sister has a septic tank and she created a kind of rock garden around it with driftwood hiding the actual lids. The driftwood is easy to move if need be. She has planted heather, sedums and other rock garden plants as hers is in a hot and sunny location.
Good to hear all the great ideas about planting over the septic. We had to have our serviced this past summer and dug a huge area out of the lawn. Ours is near the lawn edge and at the top of a hilly area. I think I could create a nice wide band of steppable ground covers surrounding some stepping stones there. It will also make it easier to walk down that hill. I love exchanging ideas here, it is so helpfull
I made a flower bed along my deck where our septic is. Planted my Cannas in it so it's easy to get to should we have to.
I can't think too well without a "picture" in front of me. Can you post a picture of the lids and existing lawn, trees, etc. in that area of the yard?
