A neighbor north of us sold all the trees on his property and that opened up a view for us alongside our roadway.  My wife and I would sit alongside the road in lawn chairs and then decided a deck there would serve us well.

This first picture is the result of three days of planting posts and installing framework...

On a subsequent visit and another two days of labor, making real progress...

Sherry, beautiful brick retaining walls, they look grand. We have just put in retaining walls in our rear yard as we have a simikar situation, with sloping ground, although nowhere near the incline you have.
My hubby is a bricklayer, so he put in drainage lines alongside the wall to take away the excess rainwater. He dug a trench on the soil side of the wall, ie: highest point and put in rubble, followed by the plastic drainage line which takes excess rainwater away to another spot, stopping it from washing soil etc down over the wall.
Not sure if this can help you any, but thought you might like to know our solution to what was a major problem.

Hi, everyone

I am new to the group and I have a project going on right now that I need an expert opinion on, we just had a new retaining wall put in and at the top edge where it is flat the dirt bumps right up to the brick edge of the wall and when it rains the dirt washes down onto the wall, I have bushes at the top and ornamental grass, but the ground right now is bare except for some sedum growing along the edge, which I put in thinking it would stop the erosion of dirt. I am putting stepping stones in to walk on and I don't want to plant grass because it will have to use the weed eater to keep it trimmed. I am at a loss as what to plant there to keep the dirt from washing over the wall. We just bought some edging material to place behind the brick it is a green recycled plastic ridget but plyable, would that help hold the dirt do you think????

As you can see in this picture it is the very top wall below the fence, it is flat and able to be walked on but dirt butts right up to the very top of the brick and when it rains runs over, what do I need to do to remedy this problem?

Great work. Please send more pictures as the plantings fill in. Although the green expanse of lawn looks well manicured.. it isn't as interesting as a nice landscape job. Thanks for sharing.

Our lakeside garden near the boat dock was largely a bermuda lawn grass. It never looked that good and was a pain to maintain. So these first two pictures are almost the 'before' (almost because you can see we starting killing off the grass in them):

The next two pictures are the 'After' pictures. The plantings started in October 2010 and just finished in March 2011. The plantings are largely gymnosperms (eg. conifers, gingkos & cycads) with a few other shrubs, trees and perennials:

Mary, Saw your photos and read about your upcoming plans... sounds great.. keep us posted on how you are doing and show progress along the way. I think that is a big part of the fun, to watch it evolve over time.

This is my new project. It is my front yard, right off my deck. The block area will be a patio with trellis or arbor, seating area and fire pit. I want to make several beds in the area surrounded by edging. It will mostly be bushes and shrubs with containers of flowers. There will be walkways of something, haven't decided what just yet. It is hard to tell how long this will take as I will be doing all the work by myself.
