Gerberas grow and survive for me outside but the flowers are no way no way as big as the ones you buy from the florist. I will have to shift mine this winter and see how they go. I posted my nepthytis neon about a month ago. Well I decided to plant a bit outside under the tree ferns and it growing, I can not believe it. Trial and era wait and see if survives.

Love this one too Grant!  Two more of my amaryllis bulbs are getting set to bloom, I don't know what color, it will be a surprise!  It's getting warm enough here that almost all of my "houseplants" are going outside.  It was getting crowded in here anyway :)

Thanks, Marianne!  They're really easy so I can't boast too much, LOL.  Here's an oldey timey type, Hippeastrum johnsonii blooming right now.  People aren't sure if it's a species or an oldey timey very early hybrid, but gardeners have been growing this exact plant and passing it along for 150 years now.  It's definitely one of the most cold hardy types, and one of the more wild looking types, with an old fashioned long tube instead of the flat faces of modern types.  I like it as a change of pace.  Happy gardening all, keep the pics, posts and updates coming!

Love your amaryllis Grant, well worth the 3 dollars!

Thanks all, glad you like the little plumeria pics.  No flowers, LOL, but hey, roots are the start of it all, right?  Thanks for looking/commenting.

Lots of amaryllis/Hippeastrums lose their leaves in winter, Elizabeth, so hopefully yours are just in a bit of dormancy and will recover soon.  Do keep us posted!

I don't grow gerberas in the ground or in pots, Kery, they absolutely HATE it here.  The humidity is just too low and the summertime temps (at night especially) are just too hot.  In 14 years here I've yet to see a single one last more than about 3 months, LOL.  I think your climate is kinder than mine, so keep us posted if you grow some.

your sale sounds so fun, Vicky!  What all did you sell??

I noticed this no name amaryllis (Hippeastrum) in bloom on the patio this week so here's a couple of pics.  I bought it as a "rescue" plant (3 bulbs for 3 dollars) several years ago.  Now it, and its friends, blooms reliably every April.  Talk about a bargain!  Happy houseplanting all!

Keryn I wish I made that much money then I could quit worrying about things that need to get paid. I have to have a huge sale with all the junk at the farm and more plants from here. Everything there is dead from no water for the past 2 years.

I know one thing about Gerberas, which you probably already know, you don't cut the flowers you snap them off into the plant as they will rot and cause problems.

Grant, I have a question for you. Do you grow gerberas in the ground ? They are a mystery to me. But not as much, sense I looked up where they are native too. Africa ! --I have lots of other African daisy's and they do very well. Gerberas,  I find love the dry heat and dry soil, but as soon as it rains and it becomes humid they hate it, they get wilting leaves with mildew and spotted flowers. They survive winter ok I have had the same plants for years. I am thinking they would be well suited to your climate unless you get frosts under 30f in winter.

Sounds like my weekend Vicky, I spent it selling some of my potted up plants at my parents garage sale. We sold $1,600 worth, so not too bad. They haven't started to sell their furniture yet. Its all a bit over whelming for my 80 year old father and 75 year old mother.

I had a blast staying home to sell plants out of my garden Thur. & Friday. I had some house plants in cups and bottles some sold some fried. So did my face but it doesn't burn or hurt. I almost sold the big palm thing but I didn't want the pot to go away. The couple were supposed to go buy and pot and come back but they didn't.
