I have posted a couple of photos of plants that I am growing where there is no natural light. I use an ultra violet fluro tube light, you can get them from a pet store that stock tropical fish,…Continue

Comment by Grant Meyer USDA zone 9 7 hours ago Thanks, Vicky, it really was pretty awful, but obviously worse for my coworker who had to spend all night/morning in the ER, so I guess I can't complain. Sorry to hear you got sick I hope you're on the mend! That construction sounds rough too. My last little cute house in Seattle (#3 of 3 there) as surrounded by super tall mega-houses that had a lot of construction going on, so I'm sympathetic. Good luck and keep us posted!
I like the look of your plant light and the cuttings too. There's just something SO PEACEFUL about plant lights isn't there? I think it's from all of my years in gloomy Seattle where I would spend evenings reading etc., by the nice warm pink-white light of a huge grow lamp growing African violets. Looks nice! Thanks for posting it.
Happy houseplanting all!
Grant
Don't think I ever remembered to put this pic in. It's not so good with the grow light behind it but I sure like these plants growing in bottles better than pots.
I can relate to horrible weeks as mine was too. CAught the crud and it has kicked my behind for 7 days so far. If you check out Veggie group you can see a lame attempt to move my stumps with a Bobcat from the concrete fellow who has me messed up over here and at the neighbos for 2 weeks now. Neighbors are adding more concrete, made the wall between them and my driveway taller, added more concrete from the sidewalk to their wall. All this after building a huge house on the lot on the other side of their smaller house next to me. I had to move a bunch of the strawberry planters since they needed access to take out part of the fence behind them. Of course it wasn't a priority to get it right back up yet. Then I had to clear a 6 ft swath so he could get into the yard & to the stumps. Aaaaaaaaaah ..............
Comment by Grant Meyer USDA zone 9 yesterday Hi everyone, thanks for the nice comments on the adenium, I appreciate them! They really are fun to grow and fairly easy, as long as you give them what they want (heat and sun) and what they don't (water in winter).
I just got back from a hellish work trip (coworker got sick and I had to spend all night/morning with her at the ER and then get meds and stuff the day after, not much sleep at all, then storms made my miss a connection so I had a panic to find a hotel (along with hundreds of others in the same boat) with a shuttle to/from JFK and a flight to Phoenix, but eventually it all worked out. The work part when great, the after work part was a hot mess, hah! So glad to be back in the sun and warmth! Anyway, that's why I haven't been able to log in much this week.
I was greeted when I got home to some seeds on my amaryllis plants (Hippeastrum). I had taken pollen from my own hybrid and put it on 'Clown' a different variety of amaryllis. I figured since mine was so young I didn't want to stress it with making seeds right after its first bloom, but the 'Clown' is older and could spend the energy to do it. I'll get them planted this weekend. Here's a pic of the parents ('Clown' at left, and my hybrid in the center), plus one of the papery seeds. So easy and fun to get and grow seeds (plus from pollination to seed harvest is only about 8 weeks). Happy houseplanting, let us see/hear what's looking good or bad in your collection!
Comment by Keryn ,Zone 10, Australia on Tuesday Grant I love your adenium obesum, love the bonsai look.
Grant, I like the contorted twisted old man look of your Desert Rose.... very unique!
Lots to do outside in the garden and I haven't started putting my Annuals into the gardens and re-potting into their new pot homes... just too cold here. But I'm thankful not to have the Tornado's that Oklahoma is getting today! Right now it is chilly and raining again, as it has been for 3 days.....
The COT plant I have looks even worse.... I will try to revive it in the shade outside this Summer. This is the last thing I will do to help to survive me!
Comment by Glenda Truscott z8 on May 17, 2013 at 9:15pm That is one odd shaped plant, Grant but one very stricking bloom.
Comment by Joseph Wright on May 17, 2013 at 8:31pm Grant, beautiful!!!!! All I have to say!
Comment by Grant Meyer USDA zone 9 on May 17, 2013 at 9:43am Fun new posts, thanks for the nice comments on my crown of thorns plant. They really ARE resilient aren't they? You're right of course Beth, they can sunburn just like people when moved too quickly into sunshine, but as yours is doing, they do recover nicely. Neat that you're getting some random blooms on your Thanksgiving cactus, Glenda, that's fun! I am too, just one or two a week, but I'll take it!
Here's the first bloom on my Adenium obesum plant (sometimes called "desert rose"). They're neat, fat-trunked succulents that make pretty blooms all summer long. Happy houseplanting all!
