Landscaper's Challenge 5B

What would you do? What plants would you use? Hi. I need to make our front entrance more inviting and attractive, so I figured I would make a group and see if anyone would like to give their suggestions.

Sharon:

Several years ago when we moved into a new home, I started at my entrance with two 6' Pom Pom Junipers. Found out later that Japanese landscape architects use them all the time in their residential designs.

They consider them to be informal "greeters" to all who visit your home. I get more reactions from visitors to our home on these plants than any other plants I have. And...I have a lot ! Both my sons and two other relatives have followed my suggestions to include one or two in their entrance "scapes" and are having the same reactions. They require little if no fertilizing and all you have to do is shape them every 2-3 months.

Oh, I am so lazy and so far behind schedule with everything in life.
I finally uploaded some pictures on my GI homepage if anyone would like to see them. Thank you for everyone who has given me any suggestions! I am still listening to ideas even though I end out doing my own thing most of the time I do love hearing the ideas of other people!!!

Hello all! I'm baaack. I just realized the other day that my HS senior graduates in a little less than 2 months! I want the front to look decent by then. (Oh why didn't I get my behind in gear last year?!) I can start planting some things soon...I can definitely start the water feature. Any new recommendations? :-)

I was going to change the picture to what it looks like now, but it kept totally freezing up the computer when I tried to change the picture, so instead I'll just add it here.

What would you do if this was what you had to work with. I want to put in a water feature on the 'left side', opposite the seating area. What would you do: fountain, waterless pond with statuary perhaps, a rocky water fall with a free-form pond,...? Plant suggestions? I love to hear it all, even if I don't do it. I still just keep thinking in so many directions and like too many things. I have seen a large concrete fountain (2, or 3 tier), a waterless pond with a kneeling fairy, and rocky waterfalls that I love; that's how I came up with each of those, but I want to hear what other people would do! :-D

So true Barbara! :-D
I added a few winter pictures the other day also. It shows a little of what I was thinking about when trying to figure this all out too. LOL
WHERE are the boxwoods? We still can't see them (and that was not plowed). It helped cut down on the ammount of snow on the actual drive though and of course we have not been using the new gravel area since before we got all this snow when my daughter pulled out that direction and we had to dig her out of the drift and use cardboard. :-D
BTW: The hyperlink above is working now.

Sharon, It looks wonderful. I do like the symmetry and the extended drive is both very useful and really beautiful. Good luck with the continued progress (not that it doesn't look done enough but as gardeners, we know it's never really "done".)

I realized I should have updated the group, in case anyone's interested. :-)
We put in the walk, and patio and I worked on the symmetry part...
So, in the area right now are: the 2 sandcherries; 2 Prairiefire Crabapples (that's how the tag spells it); 12 Green Velvet boxwoods; 6 asters (I hope that will work out well, but I may buy more boxwoods and move them); 2 mums (divided from my main garden on the side); a couple of Rose of Sharons (we'll see, they were from a catalog in the spring and don't seem too great, but hopefully the roots are getting established and it will look nice); 2 zebra mallow; lavender; some daylilies and bulbs...but not nearly enough. I had a few other things from the spring order, that didn't make it, others I put in my garden instead and not sure if I'll add. Oh yeah, and I still haven't moved the roses. 0:-)
Next year= soooo much more work! ;-) Still trying to figure out the water feature for the opposite side of the patio, and obviously a lot more plants and planting! :-D We'll also have another load of the stone we're using for the drive, after it's settled over winter.
We (and visitors) have loved the extended drive so much though. I'd intended to extend it since the beginning...we should have. At the time we had it done the drive & turn-around were enough, and definitely paving the whole thing was prohibitive, but I figured we may do something like this eventually, and it really doesn't look bad. We got a dark grey stone (of course we are in the country and don't have to worry about neighborhood associations, etc), we definitely should have done this long before we did. :-)
