I do know I want to put 2 trees in, but I'm not sure what kind...not too big or small, I'm thinking even with the outer posts of the porch, or in between the posts on each side of the front door.
Favorite trees, or suggestions? :-)

There are many trees I would think that you would want one that flowers? There are dogwoods, crabapples, flowering pear, Redbud, flowering cherry. Than there also the weeping. We happen to have a weeping cherry and a weeping redbud, the redbud is my favorite! It's also alittle more rare, the weeping. The flowers are a magenta color and then its leaves are heart shaped. I think if I were you I'd start looking at other peoples landscaping, look for similar houses, similar dive ways... Take pictures, if the people are out I usually will talk to them also.. Rember you are just looking for things that you like, it doesnt have to all be included in your plan. also go look around in nurseries, see what they, also take a pic with you, as they have ideas too! One more tip, I'll buy something and not know where I'll plant it rather I'll see how it works!! Hope this is helpful! Judi
Judi, thanks! I'm sorry I hadn't commented on this, I'd read it...I remember. I did end up with crabapples, Prairiefire. I was looking for something more unusual, but the darker color of the leaves will do that I guess, and it should work well with the sandcherries and house color, etc. Unless the nursery told me incorrectly about it's fall color. I was pretty sure I'd seen it turns dark again, but after buying and planting I looked again and 2 sources said orange. That was specifically something I said in my many picky choices ;-) no yellow or orange. I don't think that will look good at all with the house and the color of the sand cherries...
Anyway, I was also interested in Serviceberries which I had never heard of before this year. My husband went with me and we both agreed not for in front, but we'll definitely be getting at least one for somewhere. I was tempted to do like your suggestion & just buy (which I do with plants all the time), but I'm trying to stay focused (so hard, I want so much!)
I did plant a Jane Magnolia (my husband's impulsive mistake). He bought 2 small-medium sized ones & they have been in their pots the entire time. I love magnolias and had considered them and he wanted this to get done so he bought them. I set them in front of the front door on the ground (more protected, less sun) and, among other things, they proceeded to lose all there leaves as summer heated. I said, that is part of why I was not going with the magnolias (we get a lot of wind that dries them too and they only want morning sun, and the Janes say 12x12... lower branches as well (which could be pruned, but...) anyway, that proved my point of why I was not rushing. I've now found a home for one of them on the other side of the driveway, just out at an angle from the corner of the garage (obviously I'd moved them to a better spot and nursed them back to health) so hopefully all is well now with that. :-D
Oh yeah (as if I haven't rambled enough...you'll probably never read this) I had been doing the searching and always looking at houses, yards, gardens, etc. There aren't many colonial style houses in my area, or they are different kinds, but I did search them on the internet. :-)
