We built it very sturdy with logs as support and have not worried about it. oldtimers used to put the dirt directly on the boards with no water barrier, which we did add. On our ranch there are several 100 plus year old cabins with dirt roofed houses, cellars and sheds still standing, This is what gave us the idea.

Definitely an opportunity to grow on the roof. Deer can't get in it! How do you know if it's getting too heavy?
