They are a little shaded, but great morning and mid day sun. Shaded in the afternoon. We shall see if they bloom a little later. Thanks for the reply.
Carol, is it possible for you to post a picture?
Comment by Carol Howard/ Louisiana on May 12, 2012 at 7:44am I have a vine that looks like an ivy with thorns that is taking over every thing. Have tried weed killers of every kind and can not get rid of it. Does any one know what it is and how to get rid of it?
Thanks Suzanna. That is exactly the kind of information I was looking for. They will get a tray of beer tomorrow morning. Hope they like Miller Lite. I've got some and hate it. :) Really appreciate the quick response. Maybe I'll get to eat one or two now.
I just learned that June is the best month to make cuttings from the culinary plant--Sweet Bay (Laurus nobilis). If you have one, good thing because, I hear they are in demand, and not easy to locate at local nurseries. To propagate, cut a branch tip of 6 to 8 inches, strip lower leaves and shave off the bark at the bottom. Dip in rooting hormone and plant in potting medium. I was told not to over water and place in a shady area until growth appears.
Craig, Are they in the shade? I don't know if this matters, but I have some daylily plants that are now in the shade most of the day and they have not yet bloomed. I think I will move them to sunnier spot in the yard.
Charlie, your pests are either slugs or rolly pollys which both bite away at the soft fruits. My bet is that it is slugs, and a tray of cheap beer will bait them. Just set it nearby the bed. My husband formed a cage covering for our strawberries, to keep the birds off. He bent chicken wire to fit over the row of 4 or 5 plants. It's working great! But the slugs have gotten through this, of course. Hope this helps.
I noticed that several of you are in the Hammond area so thought I'd ask for help. I've got what looks like a very promising strawberry crop coming along, my first. But something is nibbling away at the berries just as they ripen. I don't think it's birds. Anyone have any suggestions on what is is and what I can do about it? Thanks for any help.
Comment by Craig Martin on May 11, 2012 at 10:39am Need a little help. My day Lilly's have taken over a space, that I planned for, but now they are not blooming near like they use to. Sporadically at best. The plants look great, but wondering if anyone knows what can be done to increase flowering like they use to. Thanks in advance.

FYI, the May 2012 issue of "Louisiana Gardener" magazine has a great article about our local troublesome weeds. "How to Manage Weeds in Flowerbeds". The article has great photos and comments on how to control them. Now I say "goodbye" to them by name as I pull them up and out of my garden!
