Hello Michigan Gardeners.....What a strange spring we had this year.....cherries are 2-3 wks behind, most of my flowers are behind schedule too. I'm northcentral MI & we just finished a long week of heavy rains! Ruined the peony blooms but everything else looks ready to stretch up to the sun & get buds. Stella Doro daylily starting to bloom & Clematis blooms looking good. Now gotta get ahead of all the weeds....

All of my heirloom tomatoes have an incurable disease that lives in the soil, it's a fungus or something. It starts with little round "target" spots that form a yellow ring around them and then eventually the leaves turn yellow with these spots and then the fruits get the spots and it's just terrible. I'm in a constant fight with this to hopefully get a few tomatoes out of the plants before the disease takes over and kills them. I'm being meticulous about sterilizing my trimmers in bleach before and after I trim off infected leaves, (which I put into a paper yard waste bag because you are not supposed to compost infected plants) but I just can't seem to get control over this problem. Has anyone ever dealt with the verticullum (sp) virus?

Sharon, I'd do the lasagna bed thing, a/k/a sheet composting, and plant what makes you happy over it. There are instructions in the Lasagna Garden book, or in a website if you google, I'm sure.

i have heard that if you pour boiling water on weeds it will kill them but have never tried it and it wont hurt the lake

Want to kill grass/weeds on a bank by the lake so I can plant some fun stuff. Any ideas on how to do that so I don't harm the lake (chemicals and erosion)

Our Weeping Cherry Tree is so beautiful when in bloom but as soon as the spring MI winds blow the flowers are gone :( Usually last about 2 days in bloom.

I keep track of monthly Precipitation totals of the Mecosta & Osceola county area, which is located in central Michigan - cities include Big Rapids, Reed City & Evart. Feel free to check out my chart that I started January 2006. It can be viewed at -

It is going to be interesting to see how our spring weather shapes up - so far it has been wonderful.............too good to be true, hey?

Does anyone have a software program they like to use when drawing up a landscape design? I'm looking for something that costs $50 or less to help me plan the occasional landscape for friends and family.
