"Forest Pansy" Redbud vs Japanese Maple
I am looking for a recommendation for a small landscape tree with red or
burgundy leaves and no fruit (like crabapples). I plan to plant it in
the front yard at the NE corner of the house in sandy-loam soil with
morning sun. Charts say we are in zone 5 but since we are also close to
many lakes (including Lake Michigan) in northern lower Michigan
(Bellaire), zone 4 may be safer.

actually if you are close to lake michigan you would go up a zone. i live on the lake and we got moved from zone 5 to zone 6 because the lake keeps us warmer in the winter.and as for your recommendation for a tree redbuds dont have red leaves.after the buds pop the leaves are green.let me look through some of me books and see what i find for small trees with red leaves beside japanese maples.

Cotinus coggygria ‘Royal Purple’ or purple smoke tree has burgundy foliage that will turn to scarlet in the fall. It has pink flowers followed by long lasting pinkish plumes clusters which gives the tree a smoky haze appearance. It's a moderate grower reaching 10 to 15 feet in height and width. -

I have looked at this tree, too. You peaked my interest, so I googled it. I found a blog with great pictures. The pix are arranged in a timeline so you can see how the foliage changes. I'm definitely interested!
