Could it be Cotoneaster? Does it grow lots of red berries?
No, but thank you so much for trying to figure it out.
The 6 to 8 foot 'shrubs' were planted in rows, like a cultivated crop.  There were no other shrubs like this anywhere else around.
Hmmm. 6-8 ft. tall? I couldn't tell that from the photo. They looked much smaller. Really neat, the way they're planted! I have some relatives in Knoxville. I'll email your picture to them, and see if they know.

Myrtle or Boxwood.    If there's a few blue/black berries-myrtle.

I know it looks like boxwood (no berries by the way), but, why was it being grown in this manner - rows, all specimens 6 -8 ft. tall and sparse.
It looks like someone planted them as a crop for selling. That is how tree and shrubs are grown on "farms". Have you ever been to a Christmas tree farm? They grow in rows too.
Thank you so much Melissa.  I really appreciate you trying to identify the shrub.

This looks like crepe myrtle from the photos.  I have something similar growing next to the house and it looks like a scraggly tree, it's hugh.  My Mom said she thinks its a crepe myrtle. Mine has pink blooms only at the top of it. I would like to cut it back to shrub size but afraid of killing it.

Definitely was not crepe myrtle, but, thank you very much for helping.  I appreciate the replies.
Crepe Myrtles can be cut back in the Spring and grown as trees or shrubs. They do best in full sun.

Leaf pattern and size looks like lacebark elm.  Not sure about the trunk view.
