I created a small planting bed in my backyard in southeast PA, zone 6. I planted two gray birch trees and surrounded the area with rocks. I also made the bed slightly bermed and incorporated coarse sand and peatmoss to make a well-drained, looser, more acid soil. I planted a Massachusets Bearberry, also called by the Algonkian Indian name of Kinnickinick, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, in the bed about 5 years ago. I'm glad to say that it is doing well and spreading more and more. This species is native from northern Canada down into the northern US. It likes a sunny exposure and a good quality, acid, well-drained soil.
