Last year, we only had a few juicy and delicious pears from each of our pear trees. The core where the seeds are were filled with fire ants so I had to peel, core, and slice them under running water.…Continue

I have a question. In IL, we could readily find bales of hay to use as mulch in our garden. I can't find any hay down here in the panhandle. I have found small bales of what looks like long pine…Continue

Comment by leah martin on February 14, 2012 at 1:05pm Thanks, Hjordis, I appreciate your post. I got to some Retreats at Lake Mary a few times a year when I can make them, that area seems very very lush. I hope you'll find time to join us more often, I could use some help over here, it's a brand new soil type for me, almost solid clay. Been gardening my whole life, first time with this - It's a challenge!
Archer is just outside of Gainesville or 'Gator Country'. Where we live is a rural area that's actually in Levy County, just 2 mi. from the Alachua Co. I belong to the Nature Coast Master Gardeners group that includes Levy, Dixie and Gilchrest. I have been so busy doing newsletters that I don't get to come visit here much. I need to make more of an effort to do this. I hope our N. FL group is growing.
Comment by leah martin on February 6, 2012 at 1:23pm Hi Everyone! I'm so happy to find this group! I've been reading all the posts of other people in Texas, MA, etc. and I live in Pensacola. Came her from Niceville, north of Fort Walton Beach area.
Looking forward to getting to know you all, find out where you are and share and receive gardening tips, ideas, techniques, whatever you'd like to share!
And - thank you for creating this north FL group! Now, let's have some fun and learn, too!
Comment by Phyllis Taylor on May 20, 2011 at 8:27am I am moving to Pensacola in about a year from Indiana and need to learn what does well there--and what tolerates the total weather there--plus what about bugs?
As for mulch, the pine needles are great for acid lovers like azaleas.Hey, do lots of azalea varieties do well in North Florida? We are so limited with what is winter hardy here and then a bad winter can still wipe them out (I lost 2 this winter).
I prefer bark mulches over hay because it has seedheads which sprout and molds up with our hot, humid summers and no breezes. I use pine bark on my blueberries too.
