Vicky,I am glad you have some praying mantis. I saw a small one haven't seen any more. Maybe I just can't see them. I don't have alot of bug problems this year though.

Squish squish squish supposedly if you plant icicle radishes in the hill it prevents them. I'll see if any of my books tell what to do for them.

Anyone know how to get rid of squash bugs organically?

12 years ago when I started gardening, obsessively because I bought (ironically), 3- 6pks.-1 of Petunias, 1 of Marigolds and 1 of Celosia. I planted them under my new bay window & they thrived. The colors popped & I was hooked. We built the home to retire in, on 1/3 acre. It was composed of dirt & boulders. The boulders became the starting point of planting beds. We are both allergic to lawn grass, Jim to the actual grass, & me to the insects. Covering all the dirt was important, so I began purchasing Ortho's "All About" books. Ground covers and Shrubs were first. I am posting some photos to show why lawn would have been impossible anyway, very little level ground. The very first year I also ordered some Roses & listened to the Guy at H. Depot. He recommended Orthene for them, which I sprayed once. I did not spend money, time, sweat and tears planting for fragrance so the yard would smell of poison. I delivered the poison back to the store and started my journey into Horticulture and the balance of nature. Although I did use poison once, I think after 12 years I can without guilt say I am a totally organic grower. I don't even have the rose now. That's the beginning of my story. I am only a couple months into Garden Share, so I will be asking for friends. I am so looking forward to hearing about all the different parts of the country and hearing about all of my fellow gardeners joys and challenges.Marian

Karla,

I'm glad you have seen some praying mantis! I haven't seen any since they were small. I don't have alot of bug damage though, so I think they are in my garden. I absolutely hate bug spray and chemicals.

Megan, welcome to this site. There is so much good info here. Could you post a picture of the gray sticky web? I think either spider web or I hope not tent worms.

You will all laugh, but I bought some organic fertilizer. A brand that I had not used before. I opent the bag and started sprinklig it around. I stated to smell really bad! My husband comes outside and asks what is that smell?! I knew I had smelt that before somewhere. It smelt like dead chickens! THat brand is a little too stinky for me. I may use it up if it seems to have worked well though. I worked it in and watered , but it smelt for two days!I hope to try making my own fertilizer next year. Compost tea or something.

Megan, welcome to the site and to Organic gardening, hope you find good info here to help you...  the comments are a bit sparse but hopefully you can read back through previous posts and glean some good tips and thoughts from them!!  :~)

Update on my comment from 6-19:  I did see ONE tiny mantis last week!!!!  YAY!!!  (I had feared that all the egg cases I noticed in my backyard had succumbed to late frosts
