Isn't it odd that Cycads would be here with Palms?  More akin to Conifers and Gingkos (all Gymnosperms)...oh well, guess they could have been with Ferns too...yawn.

Okay people anyone want to trade palm seeds, I live in Riverside CA about half way between LA and Palm Springs. Let me know what palm seeds you are looking for and see if we can help each other out.

Hello, I'm from Greensboro Georgia and live on Lake Oconee in Zone 8A. I'm in the process of completing 4 large "conifer" beds, full sun, next to the lake and after doing some additional research I have decided to expand the beds to be Gymnosperms vs just conifers so I can include related plants in a meaningful way, such as Ginkgo & most notable Cycads. I've been a little dumbfounded on what is a conifer and what isn't as I thought it was cone bearing tree like plants. But, Junipers and Yews don't have obvious cones, but have berries and apparently Gingkos are now no longer considered as a conifer. Then the Cycads who have cones, but aren't considered conifers. My brain hurts.

At any rate, I've grown two Sago Palms in my garden (shadier portion) successfully, albeit I do lose the leaves almost each winter.

First off, research indicates the following Cycads should be hardy to our climate zone (8A) here:

Ceratozamia hildae, Ceratozamia kuesteriana, Ceratozamia latifolia, Ceratozamia microstrobila, Ceratozamia Tomazunchale, Ceratosamia mexicana & Dioon edule and it's cultivars/varieties.

I've also been told that Cycas panzhihuaensis may be hardy here. Obviously Cycas revoluta as I'm growing those.

Can you confirm these will work for us and if there are others what are they?

Gary, It looks to be a Washingtonia

I've had mixed luck with the seeds. This palm will grow very quickly and requires pruning. I cannot tell from the photo if the stems on the palms are jagged and serrated. If so, it is Washingtonia, Mexican fan palm. If not serrated, it is a Sabal.

Gary, I don't think that is a date palm. A date palm does not have a fan shaped blade. Your best bet would be to check the library or bookstore for a palm book to help you identify what you've got there. Good luck.

Here is a shot of the tree in question:

At our current job site there is a huge palm tree that is dropping seed everywhere. At first I thought it might be a date palm, because I could see the seeds hanging in clusters. Anyway, can I start the seeds? Do they need to be chilled like some tree seed need to be? I plan on scooping up a bunch tommorow, I might even share, if you ask nice. BTW I live in Southeastern New Mexico, and have seen these growing al over town, but the plants are hard to find and expensive when you do. Any help advice? Thanks in advance Garry

Can I plant a cardboard palm in afternoon sun? Mostly shade in the morning and early afternoon. Thanks.

I have over 12 acres of cycads and palms here on my estate in central Florida. I would be happy to answer any questions. I have over 130 cycad species.... and (5 Cycas hybrids by Chumley) developed in the past decade. Many are very cold hearty and fast growing. www.chumleycycads.com

I have recently moved to Newton, NC from CT and would like to put palms near my pool. Can anyone give me some names of palm tress that will grow in this area that I can research.I have noticed that temps in the winter do get into the teens.
