I took a photo of this Sourwood tree near West Chester, PA, just as it was starting to develop its red fall color. Sourwood is a native species to the eastern US but it is not a common or well-known tree. A few nurseries sell it, but is is fussy where it will grow, needing good quality, acid soil and usually liking some shade and shelter from strong winds. However, this one was in full sun, as is a much larger specimen about 40 ft high near Malvern, PA, that I saw driving by, noticing the large clusters of white blueberry-like flowers in July-Aug.
