Is there a good way to start these?  A couple of years ago I tried to propagate Ivy Geraniums buy dipping in rooting hormone powder and popping into soil and most died.... Receiving two nice red/white hanging basket plants that are now kind of bald... I thought I would trim them up and take a few starts.

Thanks,

I'm thinking that putting in plain water will root. Use the top few inches and remove most of the leaves. Leave just a couple.  I do this with pelargoniums (ia) and they are so easy.
Thanks for the info on my Ivy Geraniums... I think I will try to do both in water and in loose soil on the sandy side. Maybe some with rooting hormone... I know I have done this after cutting the stem, letting it rest 15-30 minutes  and then planting it with the hormone.

Jan - I have managed to strike geraniums/pelargoniums both in water and just by literally plonking the stem into good soil.  A lot of gardeners also recommend dipping the ends into honey as it contains much the same properties as the hormone powder and the liquid hormone gel (Rootex), but personally I never bother.

Good Luck.

I have never tired propagation but I have carried my geranium's over the winter.... my plants were 10 years old last summer. I would just bring them inside in the fall, cut them back, kept them by a big window at the place I worked, give them a bit of water once in a while and in March started feeding them with Miracle Grow and more water.... when the weather was above freezing I would move them outside into the sun to start hardening them off. . . . they were beautiful all summer. I retired last year and so I just let them freeze off last fall. I had 10 huge pots and no place at home to carry them over the winter. . . .

Carole, too bad I didn't know you then.  i received a few from garden club friends and just am trying to root them.

I started some in water, and some in soil using rooting hormone... we shall see what happens.  I will share some with you if you like and if they take root.

I am really getting Spring fever!  As I walked around the yard it really looked trampled and needed a nice rain and it happened yesterday, today I awoke to snow, but it shall not be long... as I posted my first flowers the lowly Crocus.

Ivy geraniums never do well for me and end up dieing off before Summer is over.  Any suggestions?
I have always found that just rooting in water works very well. Good luck!
I finally had some success by using rooting hormone and just poking them into a sandy type soil.  I also know you should wait for about a half hour atleast after cutting them to heal over and then poke them into soil.  I think I'll take in my Geraniums as they usually donn't have the pest problems as with other plants.
