One of my favorite perennials is the Turtlehead (Chelone). There are three species: Pink Turtlehead (C. lyonii), Rose Turtlehead (C. obliqua), and White Turlehead (C. glabra). They are native to eastern North America, get about 2--4 ft high, and bear two-lipped snapdragon-like flowers in Aug--Sept. They need part-shade to full light shade and moist to draining wet soil that is of good quality, lots of humus is good. If one wants them to stay shorter, one can cut them back in June. One can cut many late blooming perennials back in May or June to stay shorter.

I do like Turtles head as well. I have it on the north side of my garage in open shade and it just does flower but I'm going to find a new home for it where it gets more light. I've seen them on the east side of buildings and they look so much nicer

Have these in my garden too and they grow well along with golden globe flowers and columbine and goats beard etc.

I stuck some of my turtle head cuttings in a tub fountain I keep going for saving broken or cut flowers or stems. Several turtle heads have rooted nicely and are now growing where I planted them on the other side of my yard. The two-year-old rooted cuttings are about to bloom.
