I'm new with seeds. The instructions I have for the kit that my sister gave me said to keep them in a dark place until leaves come up. This is for lavender, thyme and chamomile seeds. The packets I have for red poppy and baby's breath don't say to put in a dark place. I always thought seeds needed light to grow. Can someone here help me? Thanks!

Comment by Robin (N.IL zone 5) on April 8, 2012 at 8:24am Personally I wouldn't throw them out. I would plant them and see if anything comes up.
When we were visiting Alexandria,VA there was an Apothocary Shop they were renovating and giving tours, they had found one section of the building that was left as is, it had hundred of drawers with old stock of herbs and what not seeds included on the dried plants. I was so interested in it (like they had found a treasure) that I kept asking questions and one of the answers was that they were going to go through each drawer and catalog what was in it and try to propagate the seeds within. Talk about true heirloom seeds. One day I will get back there and see what came of the experiment.
I've never really done any seed planting. I found some packets of seeds that I want to start. Can anyone tell me...do they expire? On the back of the packet it says, "packed for 2008". Would they still be good? Thanks!
Hi everyone - seems seed trading comments are intermingled in various groups so I started one dedicated to trades (called 'seed trading'). Hope you'll join me there. Have posted my list as well.
