Did you know that you can plant poppy seeds in Fall?
That's right! It's time to start thinking about fall planting your poppy seeds.
Start planning your garden now for early spring poppies.
Plant your poppy seeds in late October.
The perfect time is when the soil is freezing at night but thawing during the day.
If you live in the deep south where the ground does not freeze, plant poppies in November or December so they are blooming in your coolest months.
Choose a area of your garden that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight every day.
For those of you in the deep south, your poppies will appreciate some protective shade midday.
Poppies will tolerate any soil as long as it is well drained.
If your soil is heavy with clay, ammend it by mixing in a 2 inch layer of compost.
Poppies do not need or like chemical fertilizers. If you want to use any organic fertilizers, that is fine.
Simply scatter the poppy seeds onto prepared garden soil, firm soil, and get ready for beautiful early spring blooms. Do NOT bury the seed!
I highly recommend www.onestoppoppyshoppe.com for the largest selection of Annual and Perennial seed.
