I have tried pollinating my own Daylily. Collecting seed is pretty basic. In the summer about two weeks after a bloom dies, the seed pod behind the bloom will start to dry out, and crack open. Inside the seed pod, are little black seeds.

I live in Zone 4. I will typically put the seed into a zip-loc bag, and store them in the refrigerator until January. When I'm ready to plant the seed, I put it about 1/8 inch deep in potting soil. I mist, and then cover w/ plastic.

In two or three weeks, I will start to see sprouts.

In 2 - 3 more weeks, They start to look like this.

In May, I transplant into the garden, typically in a spot that has some shade. I will move them into the sun in another summer. In 2 - 3 summers and you will get blooms.

Thgink this is a great idea I have a lot of daylilys but always want one more...
Hey I like your visual instruction guide. Plus I never new you had to refrigerate the seeds. I am just starting to do my own seeds. Thanks for the info.
After reading this post. I went out side and sure enough there were dried pods inside were seeds. Im so thrilled I put them in an envelope then in a plastice container with a lid. I know it will take a couple of seasons or more to get blooms but it will be worth it. Thanks
I work as a prep cook. I saved some seeds from cantalope, honeydew, and watermelon. Im preparing a garden bed for spring and planted the seeds just to see if they would grow. They vines are growing like gangbusters. A few have flowers. I dont think they will have time to produce fruit before the 1st frost but if not I will add the vines to my compost pile or retill them into the soil and add my composted bins into it.
