humm.  maybe if I get my hairdresser to save some hair for me I can scatter it around my yard and keep the squirrels out?

We did manage to capture several squirrels this summer!  Our dog caught 3 herself!

It is my garden plots I need to keep squirrels out of.  NO, I cannot trap them, as I don't want to leave any young without parents.  :C  I have been trying a few things - so far so good.

Pepper, right out of the seasoning jar.  Coffee grounds - while watching acid rates for plants.  Human hair!  lol.  Sounds icky - but SO FAR no squirrel has touched the plants I treated with cut up hair.

I am looking for any other ideas I can add to this.  C:  I know the mix works, but has to be replaced often.

After years of trying everything (from trash can lid to enlarge the bottom of the feeder, to hot pepper, thorny bushes, etc) my husband put a plastic post sleeve over the 4 x 4 , 4 and 1/2 ft. post. We extended it to 5 feet above ground. Not one squirrel has been able to climb it and they cannot jump that high. They do not even try anymore. He attached the platform feeder to another 1/2 foot of post so he can just lift it off to fill the seed hopper. So simple.

BTW, that's the WHIPPER not the Flipper. It will set you back about $80 but it is worth it and you'll use it forever.

The Droll Yankees Whipper works. Prior to purchasing the Whipper, three years ago, I used hot pepper in the birdseed with limited success. I also had some success with a baffler installed BELOW a feeder on a pole. Remember that squirrels can get further horizontally than they can vertically when they jump and place feeders accordingly.

Thanks Sheri! I will have to try that. I'll let you know how it goes!

I'm not sure what you're asking me, but I've spent a small fortune on buying one "squirrel proof" feeder after another. I had one that worked well for a couple months, the kind that slides shut with the weight of the squirrel, but they figured out if they chewed thru the plastic over the openings, they could stand on the feeder and eat til they were stuffed. I can't use poisons or ground traps of any kind, we have dogs. These squirrels get plenty of food, they live in a walnut tree and there are squirrel feeders all over the yard where the tree is located. Short of shooting them, I don't know what else to do and I really dont want to go there!

Hi! I"m new. I'd like to know how to stop squirrels from raiding my birdfeeders. I've tried birdfeeders that work on a weight system, you know, they close shut if a squirrel jumps on them, after two months, they just chewed thru the plastic above the openings. Recently got one with a cage surrounding it, now they just shake it till the seed falls out into a tray. Tray is not removeable. Any solutions????
