Winter Sowing is an easy seed germination method that allows you to start many seedlings for little cost. During the Winter months seeds are sown into mini-greenhouses that you make yourself from recycled containers, such as milk jugs, soda and juice bottles, take out food containers, etc. After sowing, the mini-greenhouse is placed outside to wait for the end of Winter. The seeds will begin to germinate at their own right time when weather warms. (Courtesy of WinterSown.Org)

I discovered Winter Sowing only last year (2011), but I jumped in with both feet (and 85 recycled containers) and was rewarded in the spring with some wonderful surprises (who would have thought you could start tomatoes sucessfully this way?) and more young plants than I had the time to nestle into the ground.
I am looking forward to my second year at it and hoping to learn and share with other fans of this ingenious planting method.
If you haven't before - Try it this year!

OK everyone - what's your count of WS containers so far? I am at 30, but hoping to do some more this weekend if I can gather a few more containers. I'm forcing milk and soda on everyone and tonight…Continue

Comment by Cynthia (Cindy) Zn 7B Tx on May 4, 2012 at 9:37pm MJ they look nice and healthy. I have several WS plants that have buds on them. Funny thing with me it that I had some of my plants labeled and then the writing faded and so I don't know what some of the plants are. I guess after they bloom I might can figure out what they are.
Some of my WS plants just potted!!!
Sending you the group names by message Jan.
Michele, I too would be interested in trading seeds with facebook groups. I have not seen many of my seed come up yet but up here in Minnesota its still really early. Hopefully they'll come up.
Thanks, send me the names.
Sounds easy! I don;t have many seeds to trade with:moon flower, cleomes and 4 o'clock seeds are all I have.
I was new to it this year too, but it was so easy. I put my seeds in little ziplock bags from the craft store, label them and send them in regular white envelopes with light padding. I get $.65 stamps from the post office and mail them right from home. Super easy and worth the trouble. So...harvest your seeds this year and keep them in a safe place. Trading gets busy in late summer and again in late winter/early spring. I'll message you with the group names.
Sure, that would be good, but I've never sent seeds before.
