I have some ferns in my area too. They get mottled afternoon sun and just love it. They add such a nice charm to the woods.
Willis, thanks for the link. I will enjoy comparing my many varieties to the photos and descriptions on the site. I have never planted ferns - all of mine are native - and I have some beautiful large ones that grow along the east side of my house and seem to enjoy the morning sun very much.
We ordered some wild ginger Asarum caudatum from the SWDC plant sale (profits go towards future projects). Planting will be (weather permitting) next weekend's project.
Linda, if you weren't aware there are some ferns that actually like the sun. Take a look at www.plantdelights.com - a great selection of ferns there that could help you ID plants and also maybe become a source for you too.
One of my spring projects is going to be trying to make an inventory of all the different types of ferns I have growing on my property. I don't know much about ferns, but I've noticed several different varieties and I've just purchased a couple of books on fern identification so we'll see what I can learn.
Ivan, that's great. I really can't resist some of the non-natives, i.e., hostas. Love them and would not be without them!
Sherri, good luck with your woodland creation! I have about a half acre that is covered with trees. I'm going to clean up as much as I can while the ground is frozen. This spring I'm going to try to inventory the plants that are there and start adding more natives. I'm thinking of having an area for nonnatives to be mixed in as well.
Well, bless you, Ivan! I would do that, but the Cook County Forest Preserve cops would probably have me arrested - they don't know much 'bout conservation! : ) I'm in the Chicago suburbs and am trying to create a little woodland in the back of my fairly large suburban yard - still in the planning stages, but it's going to be all natives . . .
I've got cabin fever to start the month off, so the past couple days I've been in my little patch of woods cleaning up the wind and snow downed branches. Figured I'd start now so I can be ahead of the game for Spring ... that and I need to be outside!
Cynthia - hardy cyclamen for one. Bletilla orchids for another. Jasmine vines...asiatic varieties. Strawberry begonias. I could go on and on. Lots of favorite woods plants that bloom and/or have beautiful foliage.
