I went from zone 5 to zone 5a and I have no clue what the difference is.

Woooo HOOOOO!! Since the earth shifted I am now in zone 5b!!!

I go by the frost date, however, having lived here a while now I can get a feel for how the cold weather is going and whether we have one of our rainy spells like last year.   This spring will be very interesting given that we barely had a winter.  I agree with Zigmund covering rows of plants is awesome as it can extend our growing season.  They sell at Gardens Alive row covers too.  Friend of mine swears by them.

I have to admit that I don't follow either, I just get outside whenever it's dry enough in the spring.

I went to the Farmer's Almanac site and found all kinds of interesting information!
Do y'all plant by the date or by the moon phase? (oops Y'all - my southern roots are stickin' out)

Thanks JoAnn and Robin! I'll check out the Farmer's Almanac and Dept of Nat. Resources :)
Wow, in VA our last frost date was April 15!

Welcome S. Tilghman.  I used to be a WVA person so welcome fellow southerner.  Yea our growing season up here is shorter but manageable than what you are used to. Up here in northern Ohio our last frost date is May15th.  Robin is right, find out from the Farmers Almanac or others on this site what yours is.  Right now we northerners are dreaming and planning for our growing season.  This site is awesome!

Welcome to Zone 5 S.Tilghman Hawthorne. I usually check out the old farmers almanac on the web to see what they have to say about last frost and they also have a planting guide. It's a good place to start. Also, go to your Dept. of Natural Resources and see what plants are native they might even have a sale this spring. Then you can write down all your questions and post them for discussion.

We are still a month- month and a half away from doing any real planting. But if it gets warm enough you can do prep work and there are certain veggies that can be planted now like peas.

Hi all!

I just moved to Lafayette, IN (zone 5a) from Portsmouth, VA (zone 7). In Virginia I had a very shady yard - lots of trees.
We just bought a house here (haven't actually moved in yet - will on March 16!) and will have a much sunnier yard. I'm going to have lots of questions!! I'm looking foward to having lots of flowers but also have an opportunity to grow some veggies. However I have little experience in that type of gardening, I don't even know when to start! I hope you won't mind me picking  your brains! I'll need a ton of help :)
