This may not be a wasp. It has only one set of wings. Could it be one of over 200 species of the hoverfly? Another clue, you didn't get stung either! Of course you didn't provoke him either or did you?

Thank you. I noticed this wasp on a flowering onion in my garden, took the pic and did not get stung!
