Bryophyllum yellow bloom red calyx on patio

Close up of a Bryophyllum (formerly Kalanchoe) blooming outside on the patio. The original plant was almost dead in a display at the store Anthropologie but I convinced them to give it to me to save. It's made a great recovery.

Thanks for looking/commenting.  Bob, I haven't seen one growing in a hanging basket, but it seems like it would be a good choice for sure with those big floppy leaves hanging over the edge.  Thanks for looking/commenting everyone.  Happy gardening!

Grant, have you ever seen these in hanging baskets?  A friend had one that she bought at full growth but it was in a large basket with spikes a good 6 feet long full of flowers and baby donkey ears were falling off the main plant.   I think she killed it as I have not seen it or its remains in a year or more.  Gifting small donkey ers is always popular around here.   Cheers!

Thanks for looking/commenting!  I really like this plant and am pleasantly surprised by the yellow blooms and the super-bright-red calyces.  Such a fun plant.  It's a donkey's-ear type, with the big flat white leaves that produce a single plantlet at the leaf tips, so it's closely related to the popular mother-of-thousands plants too (I posted pics of those blooming in my Feb album too). The main plant does die after blooming, but there are always some replacements ready to fill the space.  I could get addicted to Bryophyllums for sure....oh, wait, I guess I already HAVE.  :)  Thanks again--happy gardening and keep your pics, posts and comments coming too!
